Walking and Cycling to Work and School

Walking and cycling are a cheap, healthy and environmentally friendly way of getting about for work, school and for other everyday journeys. We know that not everyone can walk or cycle to work or school in Mid Wales – either because they are too far away or because they are unable to do so for another reason. The weather and terrain are also reasons why many of us choose not to walk or cycle. However, for many of us it is possible to leave the car at home and make more shorter journeys on foot or by bike. More people walking and cycling can help to reduce motor traffic congestion in our town centres and make them more pleasant (and healthy) places to live, work and visit.

Cycling and walking facilities in (and between) towns in Mid Wales are constantly being improved to make them safer and more accessible to use. By making these improvements we hope to encourage more people to walk or cycle to work, school or for everyday journeys such as shopping, visiting friends or going to the leisure centre.

All three local authorities have been working closely with school staff, pupils and their parents to develop Safe Routes to Schools schemes in their areas and are involved in many other projects that encourage cycling and walking.
